Q. Where do I go to file for HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION?
A. Homestead Exemption may be filed the following January 1 through March 31 after you purchased your home.  Exemption Applications are made at the Madison County Tax Assessor's Office and require the following information:

  • Driver's License and/or Birth Certificate
  • Social Security Number
  • Deed or Warranty Deed
  • HUD-1 Settlement Statement from closing
  • Automobile(s) License Number

Q. How much time do I have to apply for a new driver's license?
A. New residents of Mississippi must apply for a driver's license within 60 days.  If the applicant has a valid out-of-state license, only a rules, signs and eye test is required.  If the applicant's out-of-state license has expired, a road test may be required.  A Social Security card must be shown.  Minors making application must be at least 16 years of age and present a Social Security card and birth certificate for proof of age.  The Mississippi Highway Patrol operates a testing center on Terry Road at the Jackson Square Shopping Center in Jackson from 8:00-4:30p.m., Monday through Friday and in Canton at the mayor's office only on Thursday from 8:30a.m. until 4:30p.m.  For more information contact:  Miss. Q. How much time do I have to purchase a new car tag?
A. Mississippi state law requires that automobiles be registered withing 30 days of establishing residence.  Car tags must be purchased annually.  Vehicles purchased new or used from a dealer or individual must register within seven days. Licenses plates must reflect the county of residence of the registered owner.  For more info, contact:  Madison County Tax Collector  344 Hwy 51, Ridgeland, MS  39157, 601-856-4472
